Each building is designed in several fire-resistant compartments to prevent or slow down the spread of fire and smoke from one compartment to another. Important communications – such as water pipes and electricity cables – run through the walls and ceilings of the sections. They can seriously compromise the integrity of the fire compartment unless special and proven fire-resistant materials are used.
